This is truly an autobiography of the injustice that is the American Justice System. This is a story of how an innocent man can go to prison and learn to survive there or even thrive there in a warrior's society, where the weak are abused, used and often killed for no other reason than, they are afraid to fight ? even to protect themselves. This is a real look at what prison life was like during the 1970s through 2003 by someone with firsthand knowledge and who wasn?t content to just go with the flow, but insisted on trying to make the world he lived in a little better for himself and those around him. This is a must read for anyone who has loved ones behind bars or is headed there themselves for the first time. This book will give them an edge and may help them survive without all the trial and error. As in a Prison Society an error can result in a beating, having to ?Check In? to Protective Custody or even death.

Prison Stories from Gladiator School Edited Revised and Expanded Robert Thorson 9781478262787 Books Reviews

Before anyone reads this book I'd like you to know this guy is a terrible person under investigation.
My mother actually knows the author and kept bugging me and bugging me to read it, I thought it was going to be boring but to my surprise it was actually really good! I have trouble staying interested in books and hardly ever finish them but I finished this one in a few days )
Rambling stories of a morally empty man lashing out at the justice system that he feels is against him. Book ends with him being paroled after 27 years. Don't bother.
As a Corrections Officer who knows Mr Thorson personally I read the book and can actually hear him telling the stories. Don't worry about the typo's or grammatical errors. The stories come across exactly how he would tell them. Its a very entertaining read, especially for those that have been in the system in any capacity. Well worth the money IMO.
The author does have a gift for storytelling and he kept my interest for multiple pages as he spoke about his many colorful experiences behind bars.

I'm not one to care or lament on typos so I won't because the interesting writing style kept my attention. If spelling errors and grammar mean a lot to you, then skip this one until it is edited. I, on the other hand, can appreciate a story in spite of the errors. If you can capture my attention, I'll skim the mistakes.

Where the author ruffles my feathers a bit is how he talks about certain racial groups. I do understand that in a prison system, race does matter a great deal. But he often gives in to certain stereotypes. I suggest that the author take into consideration that people of different racial backgrounds (such as myself) may get offended by the wording in some of the passages. The N-word is used five times. I cringed each time but continued to read.

Location 405-..."there is a lot of black r*** walking the main line, but the blacks don't look at rape as a bad thing so they don't outcast...."

Location 3037--Africans (sic)Americans afraid of animals where are their natural jungle instincts?"

Yeah...cringe-worthy.

Location 4248--But I wanted it understood I would not hate the blacks or any minority just because they are a minority. I tend to hate people for their actions and not their color. But being a white American, I do hate the coddling the minorities get. But that's our government at work not the minority's fault."

Location 4726--"It's like you have a racial commitment to crime and while we are on the subject the Jews need to get over what happened to them in World war two and quit chasing them poor old men around that was just following orders when they worked at the camps."

There are many many more like this in the book. However if you do espouse the views of the writer, then you would enjoy this book.

As a Black woman, I actually laughed at loud at some parts and genuinely enjoyed the story until he broaches the subject about his views on race.

Also, the author does some pretty unbelievable things and gets away with it. In nearly every scene that he writes, he is constantly assaulting guards and other inmates but somehow, he suffers little consequence. He gets locked in the hole for a few days to a week but that seems to be it. Some of the fight scenes would make The Avengers give the author the side-eye. It just didn't sound credible to me, even with the story taking place twenty to thirty years ago, where prisons looked a lot different than they do today,

This book probably deserves one star for the racial stereotypes and the hard to believe fight scenes but he gets three for being a good storyteller, no matter how flawed the story.
It shows how the system is not always fair and that jail forces you to make choices that a person should never have to face. I'm not sure if this book would be better as a hand book to surviving prison or as a warning for young criminals entering the prison system. The typos were not a major distraction, because the stories were so entertaining. Everyone knows someone like Thorson, who will break the law for the a good reason (ie. Kick some azz to protect the weak).
